Good Grill, but Not “smokeless”

Overall I like this. Used it for 1st time last night over my gas stove for some Korean bbq & a NY steak, and they cooked great! Per instructions, I used medium to medium-low heat. Cooked evenly, and quicker than expected, and gave me the BBQ GRILL FLAVOR I was looking for. Top coating is very good, but I lightly coated with avocado oil to be safe. The water ring worked great, and I noticed only very little splatter on my stovetop.Only minor problems: (1) Bottom Grill Plate: not coated on bottom, so next time I’ll also add oil on bottom to make cleaning easier. (2) Smoke: right when I was about to finish cooking, smoke alarms in my 2 bdr apartment started going off. I hadn’t realized the smoke had slowly built up becuz I only smelled delicious bbq. I was surprised b/c I cook big steaks in cast iron pan on stove, and alarms never went off. Next time I’ll use this on my portable butane/propane stove, in my garage, with a fan.

Cooks just like a outdoor grill

I got this because I recently moved to a new apartment and my new place has a closed in back/front porch. I like to grill out during the summer. I am unable to put a grill out on my porch. I am on the 2nd fl and dont want to have to be running up and down the stairs to bring stuff out. Unlike my last residence it was a open porch. So I was able to grill out on my porch. So, far I made a steak, hamburgers and made some ribs. All of it came out good and taste just like I cooked it on the grill. Now, to get that charcoal grill taste. If you haven't heard of liquid smoke... get it. It makes a big difference. It makes the food taste like it was cooked on a charcoal grill. I used Wright's Liquid Smoke Hickory. You can mix it in your marinade or rub it on your food before you cook it. I love this stove top grill. Now, for all the negative reviews on this grill. This is why I dont go by anyone reviews. I chance it for myself. Please read the instruction booklet that came with it. This is a smokeless stove top grill. You can use it on gas and electric stove. Read booklet for how to use it on both stoves. If you got the fire blazing up high it will smoke, so you will need to turn the fire down and it says that in the booklet. I also take the battery out of my smoke detector before I cook. The top is non stick but it also says to oil the grill top to prevent smoke and food from sticking to the grill top.So, there you have it. My personal review and use of this grill. It worked fine for me. I think with all the negative reviews, they may not know how to cook LOL and maybe thats why the grill didn't work for them.

Baby, it's cold outside so let's grill inside!

First, let me say I wish I could give this a 4.5 star review but I can't. My only "complaint" is that I wish there was a better owner's manual. The manual is a basic piece of paper with "how" to use the product on the stove top (electric or gas but not a flat-top), oven, and outdoor grill. However, I wish they could have gone into some basic recipe tips such as how long do you cook chicken, pork, beef, and/or vegetables. I read another review and saw a general time frame. Okay, so this REALLY WORKS! I cut some large chicken breasts into smaller tenders and marinaded in a Caesar Ranch dressing for several hours and then sprinkled some Paula Deen's House Seasoning on it. I preheated oven on med heat and once I could see the eye of the burner turning a slight red I put the Stove Top Grill's drip pan on the burner. I used a measuring cup and filled it the grill with water (Pic 1) right below the lip where the edge (pic 2) would lay. I let the water come to a slow boil, that's when you hear it "sizzling," sprayed the grill with non-stick cooking spray (also pic 2) and then I placed the chicken on the grill (pic 3). Pic 4 is about 8-10 minutes into the cooking process. Pic 5: I placed lid over the grill because I wanted to contain the chicken on the grill surface and not let it slide on to the non-cooking area. Pic 6 is about 30 minutes into the cooking process. Pic 7 is after about 40 minutes. Pic 8: I coupled the grilled chicken with a homemade sunflower bacon salad. The chicken tastes great...the pieces that stayed in the center of the grill seemed to cook and char faster but the ones that cooked over the vents seemed to have a more moist texture to them. During the cooking process I added more water about 20 minutes into the drip pan to prevent it from drying out.As a previous reviewer mentioned: The cleanup was a breeze. I used non-stick cooking spray; which could have made it easier. The entire pan and grill look just like it did when it came out of the box. There is a slight and I mean very slight discoloration on the bottom of the pan where it came in contact with the burner heat. I am clinically diagnosed OCD and it's so small that it doesn't even bother me. It's the hue you would see after you use pots and pans for a while. Regarding a smoke effect because you're grilling...there was none while I was cooking. I could hear the water/meat sizzling but no smoke. The only time I got the slightest hint of smoke (actually a light fog if you wish) was when I was trying to rearrange some the chicken. I accidentally hit the grill hard enough that some of the liquid from the drip pan spilled out and made contact with the burner element. I priced several indoor grills and some were $50-100. I saw this one and read some reviews and it was being promoted as Amazon's Top Choice. Now I know why. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in grilling indoors. I can't eat beef and pork so I will only be using mine for chicken. I plan on trying some vegetables and my next endeavor will be to use it in the oven. I may come and do an update if/when I do that.

totally recommended

I'm a big fan of this stovetop grill. My apartment building has the most sensitive fire alarm in the world. I have had it go off when I'm making quesadillas on my stove and I hadn't even burned anything. Since the entire building sets an alarm off in each apartment when one of the smoke detectors is triggered, I was a little nervous about trying this grill. I'm impressed that it did not produce a bit of smoke and the food came out great. You do have to preheat it. The instructions say to preheat until you can hear a "sizzle." I threw droplets of water on it with my fingertips until I heard a sizzle. For the photos I uploaded, I had marinated chicken overnight in a delicious mustard rosemary marinade and it turned out great. I also added some dried rosemary to the water ring and my apartment smelled like rosemary while it heated up and created some fragrant steam. It took about 15 minutes for my gas stovetop to heat the stovetop grill enough to hear a sizzle. Then I butterflied one of the chicken breasts and left the other one thick to test which one would come out better. They take longer than you think they will since the heat isn't concentrated like you get with an outdoor grill. I flipped over the chicken at around ten minutes and they didn't stick at all which is amazing since I didn't use a drop of oil to grease this grill (but there was some olive oil in the marinade). I used a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature and took off the chicken breasts when the meat met an internal temp of 165 degrees. Clean-up was easy. The surface is truly nonstick. The chicken came out delicious with a crisp "crust" on the outside, but truly tender and juicy on the inside. The butterflied chicken cooked faster and got more crisp since there was more surface area. Both came out great!I'm so excited to be able to grill in my apartment despite the sensitive fire alarm!

Great results once you learn the tactics

Sirloin boneless steaks came out juicy and tender on this little grill that could. Everyone loved them especially since this was accomplished without buying expensive filet mignon nor rib eye. But can you imagine if I did?Advice: I used it on a gas stove. Pour water in the bottom, then brown them on a medium flame. Than lower the flame cover and grill them on low. Cleaning was surprisingly very easy. Use your common sense and add water to bottom as it may evaporate accordingly.

Thank you for yoursuch a lovely detailed. We appreciate your support and hope to see you again soon!

Use lower flame

Really like that the heat distribution is good. I find that using cooking oil instead of spray works a little better and lower flame so it only come through the opening makes cleaning easier

I’m in love with this grill pan! It works perfectly on the stovetop for Korean BBQ, and the results are amazing. Even better, it was on sale. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great stovetop grill pan.

Works pretty good

I would suggest washing it really well before you use it. The first time I used it I miss read directions taking the gas stove grate off which kept putting out the flame! Duh! Finally reread directions and it worked. I did brats the first time and even though I sprayed with Pam they stuck a little and it was hard to clean. Since then it has worked fine. I turn on the stove fan.

You get what you pay for, but it works (mostly)

I needed something to add some “char” to meats during inclimate weather when I can’t do it outside. The materials used are, you guessed it, cheap. Aluminum frame and a rather thin/flimsy grate that has a basic old school non-stick surface. I’d personally pay double for a nice stainless frame and a solid cast iron grate if I could find one.Because of the non-stick surface material, it doesn’t want you to heat it beyond 350°. This makes it hard to get nice sear marks. This is definitely more geared to those wanting to cook thin sliced meats at lower temps, or to “grill” veggies. Do not use this near respiratory sensitive pets like birds, as it can easily overheat and will create toxic fumes.

Ingenious!

So pleased with this item! I have just moved to an apartment where grills are not allowed indoors or on our balconies. With storage space at a premium, I was looking for a compact way to grill indoors without making a huge mess or setting off the smoke alarm. This little grill fits the bill perfectly. I used it to grill my first summer hot dog. I even toasted the bun on it.CAVEAT! You MUST put water or liquid in the lower tray to avoid smoke. Without liquid or water, the juices roll off of the dome, splash on the hot tray, and create smoke. One more important point to describe the grill. The lower tray is similar to a tire rim. There is no center. The inside circle on the rim of the tray encircles your stove’s flame. Heat rises up through the center opening to heat the dome. The dome has slots around the perimeter, which are directly over the trough in the tray. This allows the juices to flow from the dome directly into the trough without splashing on the stove.I must admit I was extremely cautious, not knowing what to expect, but my fears were unnecessary. This is a very cool little item, brilliant engineering. Both pieces washed off easily, and I could have put them in the dishwasher if I chose. Perfect item for my needs.

Very Satisfied!

Very pleased with this product. Delivery was swift.Great product for the price.I received the grill today, took it out of the box, carefully read the simple instructions, washed and dried it in hot soapy water, rubbed the cooking surface with a little oil, filled the ring with water as directed, preheated the grill over MEDIUM heat, on my gas stove (it fit perfectly) and placed my marinated Korean boneless, skinless chicken thighs on the cooking surface. This grill heats up very quickly, and in no time I had absolutely juicy and delicious chicken thighs. My apartment only smelled of the delicious aroma of grilling Korean barbecued chicken thighs. This product actually GRILLS, rather than steams, with the fat running down into the liquid ring ( I like this healthy option), and the chicken had a nice char. I also basted it half way through cooking with fresh marinade. No smoke, no splatter, no mess, no smoke alarms going off in my apartment, no neighbors banging on the door. I didn't even turn on the exhaust fan.I washed the grill by hand, and cleanup was a snap!!Can't wait to try veggies and shrimp next. For some reviewers who had problems with smoking and splatter.Follow the instructions carefully.Do not cook on high heat -- you really don't need to, this grill gets plenty hot on medium.Fill the liquid ring with 1/2 cup of liquid.Do not place frozen food on hot grill, thaw first. If using marinade, drain the food and pat dry before placing on grill surface.Trim excess fat from meat and chicken.Maybe not the best option for huge thick slabs of meat, use your outdoor grill for that.If grilling burgers use lean ground meat.I think this grill works best with boneless cuts of meat and chicken.Pay attention, and do not over cook.Happy indoor grilling.Cheers!

The volume of high ratings convinced me to try it

The vol of high ratings convinced me to try it. I would have been too skeptical based on appearance alone. Even when it arrived I thought I could tell it would not be so great as the advertising claims. Now that I have used it one time I am very surprised at how it cooked the food. I could describe a list of things leading me to believe that it would perform poorly but it does not matter because somehow the design does better than I imagined. It is going to require experimentation. Many vegetables need a coating of something (I would have used an oil) or they just become dried charcoal instead of charred on the grill. But I got this to avoid/reduce fat and grease. A sauce maybe? Olive oil maybe? My first attempt was an experiment.I recommend adding some liquid smoke to the trough of water. It definitely fills in the gap between indoor and outdoor grilling. I live where you cannot BBQ and this gets surprisingly close with the liquid smoke. Liquid smoke doesn't taste like the food has been BBQ'd to me but in the steaming water the vapor imparts convincing flavor and aroma.I like grilled food to be charred outside and juicy inside. You have to open up the house or the smoke alarm will go off. It just crosses into that territory.....it isn't billowing like an outdoor BBQ but meat will have enough fat to create some smoke if you like it charred outside and juicy inside. I didn't expect it but there was relatively little and it cleared out quickly once I opened up a little more ventilation.I think this will be ideal for grilling fish. I prefer denser meats like beef and pork to char pretty good on the outside. This could achieve that but you would need several fans blowing air in and out the windows causing a strong flow or fresh air. Fish cooks so much faster and smoking is so much easier to control.Docked it one star for a caveat: The way it sits on the stove top. I have a gas stove. I doubt this cooks as good on an electric but it proved me wrong in other aspects so who knows? I think my stove top grate is fairly standard. Even if it isn't, the design of this pan could be improved so it has a smaller diameter ring on the bottom that would accommodate a greater diversity of appliances. If I shift it more than 1.5" (which could easily happen when cooking) it is going to tip and slide off the grate. That hot liquid will severely injure you if it splashes or spills on you. I have to have it on a front burner because it is too wide and will potentially scratch part of the stove that extends above the grate along the wall. This will greatly depend on your stove. But I am going to look around for a way to lock it down. A cast iron C-clamp may work. It could be clamped to my stove grate and serve as a fence preventing the grill from sliding off the grate. For only $20 give this a try. It is not even built as cheaply as I expected. All non-stick coatings stop working eventually. Google "America's Test Kitchen" on this topic. Their research is as scientific as you'll probably find. Hopefully this will last at least the average lifespan. But just remember it was only $20.

I filled the ring with 1/2 cup water like the instructions said and oiled the non-stick top

I bought this type of grill as a recommendation from a coworker for grilling meats indoors. I live in a small apt and don't have a lot of space for storage of a large griddle. I saw other similar items on Amazon, but the cheaper ones had reviews stating that the non stick peeled after a use. I figured I'd shell out an extra few bucks if it meant longevity.I filled the ring with 1/2 cup water like the instructions said and oiled the non-stick top, like another reviewer suggested for easier clean up. The meat turned out amazing. One reviewer said that you need to preheat a while as it's 2-3" from the flame, but mine was smoking in a couple minutes. I think you need to know your burning to gage preheating. My gas stove top is so hot that usually when cook, I can only turn it up 3/4 of the way for "high" heat or it damages my nonstick pans. I turned it up all the way so it would get nice and hot.I bought a pack of pre-marinated thinly sliced Korean BBQ meat (bulgoggi) and the meat turned out juicy w/some nice crisp caramelized edges, which took maybe 5 min for the first batch, less for the next. Also, as I went to put on the next batch, the grill was already too hot and starting to burn, so i had to turn it down.Yes, there is some smoking, as you're grilling meat as that's what meat does when you grill it. Yes, there will be a little bit of sputtering, as that's what meat does when you grill it. Clean up of the non stick top layer of the grill and the aluminum ring was super easy. Just a quick wipe with my soap sponge. Underneath, on the other side of the non stick side of the grill is harder. I scraped using my nail through the soap sponge and was able to get most of it off. I can't wait to try out some shish kabobs, burgers and steak. As this was only my first use, I have yet to test out it's longevity. But as of now, I. Love. This. Grill.

A Grill for all seasons!

After reading the several reviews of this product, it was exactly what it promised to be and what I expected. Like several others, I live in a small apartment in NYC withan ill-placed fire alarm that seems that it would go on if I boiled water, and it does if I make toast! I keep it disconnected most of the time. This is smokeless if following directions, and thus far after a few uses it allows me to enjoy what amounts to my only option in the city to "bbq", we aren't allowed outdoor grilling on terrace, and none on the outside. Embarking on a regimine of healthier eating with less fat this is ideal, and as a senior man living alone, an ideal size as well to give a reasonable sized meal complete with veggies - I've grilled esparagus, zucchini, onions, mushrooms and potato on it as well as shrimp and salmon, with success, it is exactly what the doctor ordered and while the advice of adding more than the suggested amount of water to the tray (I always follow directions first), but through trial and error, ended up as several others have nearly doubling the 1/2 cup. I have no problem waiting the nearly 10 minute warm-up time, but hey - I'm old and immediate gratifications isn't as important to my life style! It isn't quite stick-resistant, but I was prepared for that as well. I would recommend this product in a heart beat (provided my heart continues beating, which it may a little longer thanks to this)!

Awesome for apartments, but had to go against guidelines to get good results

tl;dr This is good for the price, but you might need to break some of the instructions to make it work. Great option for apartments. This is a great option for apartment living to mix up your cooking methods. We got it with little expectations, because in the world of grilling and kitchen items, this is a fairly cheap expense. Our first experience was poor. We have a glass top stove, and we followed the minimal instructions that were provided. It took way too long to cook anything, and I could barely get the meat to a safe heat. There just wasnt enough indirect heat to cook anything. We know that if we had a different stove it would work better, but despite that handicap we expected more. We almost threw it away. But I gave it a second shot and broke the two big rules that they say to "NEVER" do. We cooked on a larger heating element and we cranked the heat up to max heat. I'm not sure what the concerns are, since the instructions provided no information explaining why we could not use high heat or a large element. But once we did those things we achieved that sizzle you expect to hear and our meat and veggies cooked at the speed youd expect from this product. It was still slower than a grill, but ultimately that worked to our favor, since the meat was tender and juicy.Tips from our experience: Add more water than the measly 1/2 cup recommended. You can pour it directly onto the aluminum and it will trickle into the reservoir without slowing down the cooking or taking it off the heat. By using a larger heating element you're going to see some of that water boiling, so just pay attention and add more water as needed. Also try not to move the grill around much while cooking. My best guess to some of the NEVERs imposed on this grill has to do with scratching your surface. Using tongs to lift food vertically will help with this.PROS:Easy to clean, smokeless, heats up quickly (when enough heat is applied)CONS:Instructions need more information. It's a simple tool, but you'll need some trial and error to get it right for you. Glass top stoves may find this too difficult to work with. I had to break all the rules for it to work as desired.
